SHIP Benefits

SHIP Benefits Overview

Do you know about all the benefits included in your Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP)?

Our student health insurance through United Healthcare Student Resources is a nationwide PPO plan that covers you here at school and at home, wherever that may be. The copays are low and there is no deductible. There is a $2000 out of pocket maximum per plan year. SHIP also includes 1 routine eye exam + refraction per year for a $25 copay. Make sure you use an in-network provider to keep your cost as low as possible! Another notable benefit is that SHIP runs annually from August 1st-July 31st so there is never a lapse in coverage.

SHIP advantages extend past basic insurance benefits. Each plan includes Academic Emergency Services (AES) coverage. AES provides health care services while traveling. This includes evacuation, repatriation, emergency medical transportation and more. AcademicLiveCare (ALC) is a wonderful free virtual resource provided for all students, regardless of SHIP enrollment. ALC is a great site to go on to speak with a professional regarding mental health, medical issues, nutrition consultations and more. Whatever your needs, SHIP has you covered.

How to use your SHIP

Here is a step-by-step guide to using your United HealthCare insurance:

First you need to download the United HealthCare SR App. This is a great resource for accessing your digital id card, finding care and checking claims status.

Next, find care in your network. This is important because out of network care is much more costly!

Call the provider to schedule an appointment.

At your appointment, make sure to give them your insurance information so they can bill UHC for what remains after your copayment is made. You will likely need to pay a small copayment for your visit, this will be collected before or after your visit.

You will later receive a bill from the provider showing either that you are paid in full or owe for services not covered by UHC. If you did not pay a copayment at your appointment, you will owe that fee now. If you had any testing done, you will likely owe a 20% coinsurance fee. You can check in your UHC Student Resources account to see exactly how much UHC paid the provider and what they made patient responsible.

Why Do I Need Health Insurance?

You might be saying to yourself “I’m young and healthy. Why I need health insurance?â€

While insurance coverage may not be at the top of your list, it is an incredibly important safeguard against the large amounts of debt that can be incurred from just one accident. The average injury could cost an uninsured person upwards of $50,000. Without health insurance, that fee would paid solely by you. It is not uncommon for people to claim bankruptcy specifically because of insurmountable medical debt.

Having health insurance also encourages a healthier lifestyle. With preventative care being provided free of cost, there is no excuse not to get regular checkups and yearly preventative examinations. Preventative care checkups can often help find something early on so that treatment can be administered quickly.

Â鶹·ÖÐÐ requires that all students have health insurance coverage, which is why we offer a comprehensive nationwide insurance plan for students who aren’t covered by another insurance or who want a better plan. Our Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) has no deductible, a $2,000 out of pocket maximum per plan year and low copayments. Whether you choose SHIP or your own insurance plan, it is important to be covered for any medical situation that may arise.
