Watching Mines win and win and win again

Mines’ athletics are just as impressive as our academics—and Â鶹·ÖÐÐ continue to prove it.Ìý

Winning is synonymous with Â鶹·ÖÐÐ, and we’re not just talking about design competitions. On the field, court, track, course, mat or in the pool, Mines’ athletics teams dominate every season, taking home major conference titles with roaring crowds cheering them on to victory. With 18 NCAA Division II athletic teams and state-of-the-art athletic facilities, Mines’ student-athletes show up to win—all before rocking that geology exam or making new discoveries in the lab. Who said nerds can’t be good at sports? Ìý

Many Â鶹·ÖÐÐ excel in the classroom and on the field, such as JoeÌýPopp, former left fielder for Mines. Popp is a two-time First-Team Academic All-American and graduated from Mines with a 3.947 GPA. In addition to helping Mines get to two consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, Popp worked on a senior design project bringing a micogrid of solar panels to a village in Tanzania.

“We have exceptional small-school athletics, from football to basketball toÌýlesser-knownÌýsports. Watched the Â鶹·ÖÐÐ play on national stage TV during NCAA tournament basketball this spring.â€Ìý

“It’s absolutely thrilling when you tell an outsider that essentially everyone wins RMAC and the response is, ‘I thought Mines was just a nerd school.’â€Ìý

“MinesÌýAthletics is amazing. They win all theÌýtime, andÌýbeing a student in the stands watching is alwaysÌýreally fun. Going to a smaller engineering school, I was worried we wouldn’t have big sports events, but they’re truly fun to go to. It’s also amazing to see your friends on the field or court, whether they’re a player, a dancer, a cheerleader or whatever else.â€Ìý

“I’m not very into sports myself, but I loved attending the Mines football games with the marching band freshman year. It’s a huge point of school pride to see your classmates excel in both the classroom and on the field. I would recommend that even non-sporty students give a home game a try. We’ve got great athletes on all of our teams, and it’s a great way to support your classmates.â€Ìý

Ìý“Our athletic program is extremely good, which makes it so easy to go to games and cheer them on. One thing I loved to see was all the other athletes in the stands cheering on whoever was playing. It just shows that tight-knit community at Mines. Games also serve as a nice study break.â€Ìý

“Mines has top-notch athletics, and there is nothing quite like the energy that exists in any of the arenas on a given night. Just go and support your fellow Â鶹·ÖÐÐ and have a great time with some friends.â€Ìý

“At Mines, you have the chance to watch nationally ranked teams play all year long. I’d highly recommend going to football and basketball games and anything else you can make time for!â€Ìý

“As a student-athlete, I say go to all the games. We put in a lot of work to perform at a high level, and we love having fans to cheer us on—even if their cheers are kind of nerdy.â€Ìý

“Sporting events are simply the best. Free food (like Woody’s and Gold Mine Cupcakes), free shirts and free entertainment. Who doesn’t love to watch nerds win at sports? With such a small campus, the best part is going to games and cheering on your friends and peers, the people you are up late studying with or sitting next to at Mines Market. There is no better way to feel like part of the community than singing the fight song all together after a Mines win!â€Ìý

“All I can say, as a Mines basketball fan, those down-to-the-buzzer games standing in the Lockridge in the student section will be my favorite Mines sport memories. The energy in the gym is palpable, and all of us are on the edge of our seats. Even more amazing is when the shot isÌýmadeÌýand the buzzer goes off and the Â鶹·ÖÐÐ win the game! Those were some of my favorite memories as an Oredigger.â€Ìý
